Nice picture its hard to believe we can see these beutiful and distinctive galaxies but the closest galaxy to our own is still many thousands of years away at the speed of light, indeed our own galaxys nearest (spiral) galactic neighbour Andromeda M31 is 2.5 million light years away and is more than twice as big as our own milky way... i find the universe to be the greatest giver of clarity- it certainly puts everthing into perspective!

Your right Chris, its pretty mind blowning when you stop to think about it. I just love the whole cosmos, I always have. You know the images of the moon monkey in Fallout, I grew up with that kind of sci fi..Fallout 3 moved me to my core. Even the rubble strewn areas, i used to play in bombed out old factories and train yards as a child..

We have so far yet to go before we get to exploring the galaxy in person but for now we have the ability to stare into the cosmos in wonder, we are capable of looking back into the begining of the universe by staring at the most distant stars due to the time light takes to travel from distant sources... its odd to think that the most distant star light we know of and can observe nowbegan its journey to us before our solar system had even formed and supernovas we see winking out today expired millenia ago.
