Is it sombody that trains hard?
trains for long periods of time?
Is it sombody that understands the lingo?
Is it sombody with great body conditioning?
somone that can punch fast, hard?
The simple answer is no!
All those attributes all add to a person becoming a great martial artist true, but what im referring to is somthing very simple.
Every student of any martial arts regardless of lineage or style, will at some point come up against the brick wall that is known as
"The drop off point"
This is when enthusiasm fades, training stops and excuses justify non action.
Some, very few, do actually weather this storm of self doubt and finally emerge the other side of the tunnel with renewed
vigour and zest. It is these few that really deserve the term
"Great martial artist"
The image above is of myself and the only surviving member of my original team, Chris ( Fei) who's unwavering support has helped Mendip Wing Chun Kuen become the great school that it is today.
Anyone can dream the dream, only a few actually follow it through to completion. I salute all those that have read these words and know what it means to come back fighting.
The simple answer is that good instructors train hard for their certification.
I have witnessed instructors being presented with certification to satisfy insurance companies. Ive seen money changing hands, just so that it appears to the outside world that they are legit.
You name it, its been done. I've also seen advertisments for club instructor vacancies (no previous experience needed!) So if your enroled in a class and the instructor dosn't seem to know what he/ she is talking about...!!!
We invented cricket !! but we are not the best at it ! names are names, skills are far harder to inherit !
Thanks to the late Bruce Lee, the world knows about Wing Chun.
You could say Bruce is responsible for Mendip Wing Chun's existence. Thats a fair comment to make. He played a huge part in bringing kung fu, in particular Wing Chun to the eye of the masses back in the 70's.
However in reality, we must look a little deeper than that. Bruce was the pinnacle of perfection, true.
He was coached and mentored by two great masters, Granmaster Ip Man and Grandmaster
Wong Shun Leung. Without these two, Bruce may have never achieved what he did.
So in reference to Mendip Wing Chun's existence, it really came down to these three ledgends.
These three men have given us the people of the world a truly amazing legacy.
Starting somthing new is a good way of shaking off the shackles of stagnation. As human beings we will always look for the short cut, the easy way. However, generally we learn very little within the confines of our comfort bubble.
Some already know this and just cant wait to jump at the challenge. New energies always bring about a new look on life and that cant be bad. So I would like to extend the arms of welcome to all our visitors now and in the future.
Great things begin when you look with your heart.
